Jim Marner - Scotland's goalkeeping hat-trick king

Jim Marner, the Scottish goalkeeper who scored a hat-trick of penalties in 1975
The record books will tell you that Paraguayan José Luis Chilavert is the only goalkeeper ever to score a hat-trick of penalties in a match. He did the business in an Argentinian league game in 1999.
But Scottish football can claim two men who achieved the same amazing feat well before Chilavert: Sam McAloon in 1937 and Jim Marner in 1975. They both played in junior football, and guest blogger Douglas Gorman caught up with Jim to hear about his penalty hat-trick for Ayrshire team Kilbirnie Ladeside.

Fantastic article. Much appreciated thank you so much. I did not expect this amount of story all these years on. This is 45 year on so different in these days no money involved. Thank you so much for everything.

Michael - thank you for your kind words. It was great working with Jim on this. It started off by us wondering which other 'keepers had scored a penalty hat-trick and that led to the article.

Great goalkeeper I was a very young goalkeeper playing for troon at the time .. i was getting a few games . Troon had a stalwart called Tony O'Brien so not easy for a 16 year old. We were playing Kilburnie and I got the bad news. No playin'. What I got told was "stand behind Marners goal and watch EVERYTHING he does and everything he says. Next game you play remember it all"

David - thank you for the story. I wish I had heard of that before I wrote the article as I would have most definitely included it.

Jim, that's a fascinating story. When they come to make the film who do you want to play your part? In the press photo, you look like someone out of 'Viva Zapata'.

Martin,
Thank you for your comments. A great article by Douglas published by Andy. It has been a great journey from Morton Reserves at 15 to Hampden and Junior Cap at 23 then Australia to Fitzroy Alexander and professional football in Phillips National League. Other than a career and living in football here I have been blessed.

Jim,
David Thompson's reply says it all. Douglas Gorman's article original article doesn't just recite the facts - he captures the essence of the games and your character.
What a fine career you had.
Best wishes.
Martin

Thank you so much for the comments. Douglas wrote a fantastic article on goalkeepers scoring and myself a large part of this. I am forever in his debt. It started with a question from me and without any prompt he produced an amazing article on the website. Thank you to everybody it has been read by many fans and friends from all over the game.

Douglas, enjoyed this article and the photo even more!

Jim always has time for you and a story to share.

So modest he managed to keep his past glories untold until today!

Great skills, hat trick hero!

Looking forward to his book.

A brilliant article on a junior football legend.I was a young apprentice plumber when Jim was a Joiner with Greenock Corporation and loved listening to his football stories and exploits in the junior ranks. Jim was also a great role model for us younger footballers (myself, Des McColl and Paul Church) who all worked with Jim at the old Crescent Street yard in Greenock.

It certainly does Jim, after almost 40 years with the Scottish Prison Service I retired in 2018. Still following football in the Junior ranks as a season ticket holder with Blantyre Vics (my pal John Gibson is the manager).Still keep in touch with some of the old gang when I visit Greenock. Hope you and the family are keeping well. Great photo with Hugh McDonald almost didnt recognise you without the moustache.
